Louis Poulsen: Illuminating the World for over a century
Livingspace brings you Louis Poulsen, a luxury lighting brand established in Copenhagen, whose journey in lighting design began in the 1920s.
Originally established in 1874, Louis Poulsen began its story by introducing Danesto fine wines from around the world. About 20 years later, as electricity became a part of everyday life, the brand gradually transitioned into the luxury lighting brand we know today.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967), known as PH, was a renowned designer and architect from Denmark. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in 1924 and throughout his career in lighting design, he created many iconic fixtures. These designs continue to shape contemporary design and lighting practices today, solidifying Louis Poulsen as the world’s first House of Light.
In 1958, a classic was introduced: the PH 5 lamp, designed by Poul Henningsen. This iconic lamp, now found in many homes worldwide, is based on Henningsen’s three-shade system, which ensures that the light is soft, pleasant, and completely glare-free. This makes it the perfect lamp for dining room tables.
In the same year, Poul Henningsen designed another icon, the PH Artichoke, for the Langelinie Pavilion, a modernist restaurant in Copenhagen. The PH Artichoke continues to enchant guests to this day. Its 72 metal leaves form 12 precise rows with six leaves each, ensuring flawless, non-glaring light from any angle.
At the very beginning of the 60s, another world renowned architect and designer, Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) launched his AJ lamps in collaboration with Louis Poulsen. The lamps were designed for the SAS Royal Hotel, characterized by a sleek, geometric aesthetic, the AJ lamps feature a distinctive, adjustable shade that directs light precisely where needed, providing both direct and ambient illumination.
The iconic Panthella lamp from 1971 is one of the most popular lamps by designer and architect Verner Panton (1926-1998). The collection includes table lamps, floor lamps, and portable versions. The shape is characteristic of Panton, who strove to create a lamp whose light was reflected in both the base and the shade. The Panthella produces an appealing and atmospheric light, illuminating its surroundings softly and comfortably.
This year Louis Poulsen celebrates its 150 year anniversary. In celebration of the milestone, a special Anniversary Collection is introduced, with a series of iconic designs, transformed into unique and collectible pieces with a Pale Rose hue on the inside of the shades and brass details.
