Known for its comfortable, informal and snug design, 2023 marks half a century for the iconic Togo seating collection, originally designed by Michel Ducaroy in 1973 for Ligne Roset. Reimagined for its anniversary year in La Toile du Peintre, a contemporary tapestry with a large graphic pattern and vibrant colours that reinterprets a work by painter Heather Chontos, the limited-edition Ligne Roset Togo collection can be found in Vancouver exclusively at Livingspace.

Celebrating West Coast Modern Week 2023

West Coast Modern week was back in 2023, running from July 5th – 10th. Presented by British Pacific Properties and the West Vancouver Art Museum, the weeklong event celebrated modern architecture and design that pays tribute to the West Coast and its unique topography. Known the world over for its pristine and abundant natural beauty – lush rainforests and mountainous terrain with the Pacific Ocean at its feet, the West Coast presents a unique (and uniquely challenging) landscape for architecture.

The week’s events were presented by the West Vancouver Art Museum, which included an itinerary of panel discussions from a multi-disciplinary group of design and architecture experts; two film screenings; a poolside cocktail party at a private residence; the Annual Barry Downs Lecture Series with a presentation by Dr. Michael Prokopow; the 16th Annual West Coast Modern Home Tour and Afterparty; and a private West Coast jazz concert featuring the Cory Weeds Sextet.

Sewel’s Landing Apartment & Sanctuary Boathouse, furnished by Livingspace Interiors

One of the properties to take centre stage at this year’s West Coast Modern Week was the Sewell’s Landing Apartment & Sanctuary Boathouse at Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, furnished by Livingspace Interiors. The stunning property has the interesting characteristics of southern exposure and great access to light while also boasting glorious views up Howe Sound to the north.

Conceptualized as an extension of the Horseshoe Bay village, the project’s design inspiration comes from its West Coast marine setting, influenced by architects Arthur Erickson, Ron Thom, Fred Hollingsworth, and Ned Pratt. It was built around themes concerning locality, community, waterfront, and continuity.

Ligne Roset's Togo Turns 50!

In 2023, Ligne Roset is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Togo, the iconic seating collection designed by Michel Ducaroy.

Manufactured for half a century in the foothills of the Jura mountains in Briord, France, Togo celebrates its 50th birthday with a new special edition design!

A symbol of the changing times of 1968, Togo is the result of Michel Ducaroy’s reflections on the almost limitless formal possibilities of new materials such as quality foams and polyester quilting. Discover the history of Togo.

For its 50th anniversary, Togo is dressing up in a limited edition covering which will be sure to add personality to any interior. La Toile du Peintre by Pierre Frey will be available until the end of 2023.

With La Toile du Peintre, Togo is adorned with a contemporary tapestry with a large graphic pattern and vibrant colors that reinterprets a work by painter Heather Chontos. Its scale and joyful, free strokes make this fabric an ode to artistic expression that will energize its surroundings.

A life companion for 50 years.

Over the years, the Togo sofa has appeared in countless homes and commercial spaces around the world. Its popularity and versatility mean that it is just as much at home in a modernist apartment as in a cozy ski lodge or a classic Parisian apartment. It has featured in numerous films and TV shows, including the iconic Friends TV series, where it took center stage in the living room, becoming an instant classic.

The Togo embodies exactly what its designer envisioned – a comfortable, informal and snug sofa, which invites you to sit, relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Salone del Mobile 2023 - Our Week In Milan

The 2023 Salone Furniture Fair Yields Fresh Design Inspiration Aplenty

The April 2023 Salone del Mobile Furniture Fair in Milan was a major success and represented a full-scale return to the ways of fairs past, with extravagant displays and sprawling pavilions from the top brands in design.

Our team spent a jam-packed four days at the fairgrounds, and visited over 30 supplying partners at fairground booths, flagship showrooms, factories and special exhibits throughout Milan and Northern Italy.

Promoting 'Slow Design', the antithesis of fast fashion

This year’s show theme had a distinct “Slow Design” feel to it. Combating the ‘fast fashion’ trend in the furniture industry has long been a driving force behind Italian furniture design. While Livingspace  consciously partners with brands that counteract a hyper-consumerist market for decades, we’ve encountered a growing number of companies and initiatives at Salone working towards creating products that are eco-friendly and sustainable, while also paying employees fair and competitive wages.

A few of our highlights from Salone week

The Minotti Pavilion

Minotti pulled out all the stops with Salone’s largest exhibition, titled the “Minotti Pavilion”. Spanning approximately 4000 square metres across two levels, the sprawling complex was the jewel of the fair. Architecturally custom-built exclusively for the fair two weeks prior to the event, the pavilion consisted of a private wing and a public-access wing, bisected by a large glass tunnel vestibule allowing visitors to see the spectacular designs on offer.

Central to the concept of the Minotti Pavilion was the desire to create a fully immersive Minotti experience, untainted by outside influences. To achieve this, the exhibition featured large privacy walls blocking out the rest of the fair and keeping the focus of attendees exclusively within the curated Minotti environment. Additionally, despite the temporary nature of the exhibition, the Minotti display came complete with fully functional plumbing, providing visitors with a real-world simulation of living in a Minotti furnished home.

The Baxter Villa

The Baxter Villa is a small villa dating back to 1902, which serves as an immersive showcase for the brand, displaying Baxter’s in-house collections of dining tables, outdoor furniture, exquisite leather armchairs and sofas, and marble coffee tables – all in a spectacular setting in the hills above Lake Como, Italy.

Our team had the opportunity to visit the Baxter Villa on the Sunday before the commencement of Salone del Mobile, setting an inspirational tone for the week ahead.

Paola Lenti’s new flagship

The newly planned Paola Lenti’s flagship was still under construction when our team visited, but in motion are big plans for what is sure to be a truly unique experience, in typical Paola Lenti fashion. In time, the current space will be converted into a multi-functional Paola Lenti owned and operated boutique space, which will include a restaurant & bar, a spa and a small-scale hotel.

The company’s 2023 collection is a stunning reflection of their eco-friendly and anti-consumerist business objective, and we can’t wait to bring some of these pieces to Vancouver and share them with the local design community!

Paolo Lenti is often credited with having invented the concept of slow design in the outdoor furniture sector, and they are known for fostering extremely positive relationships with their factory workers, whom they affectionally refer to as their “artists”. At the core of the company’s ethos is a commitment to free-flowing creativity and a resistance to what’s trendy. This untethered creative spirit is the soul of Paola Lenti, and it is evident in each and every one of their designs, which makes our visit with them a highlight each time we are in Milan.

Porro’s history-making President of Salone

As is the case with Paola Lenti, Porro too is in the process of launching a new flagship to showcase their brand. Their new facility is located just off of Via Durini, the most popular street for high-end furniture design in Milan.

Our team had the chance to connect with Porro’s head of Marketing Communications, Maria Porro, who this year made history by being appointed the first female President of Salone del Mobile.

The ‘Free System’ from Acerbis

A brand that is really starting to make an impact in the design world, Acerbis’ “Free System” had everyone talking. A super comfortable and on-trend modular sofa that was redesigned from the company archives for their 2023 collection, it was one of the highlight pieces to come from the fair this year.

Casa Manzoni with La Manufacture

For the week of Salone, La Manufacture had their brand exhibit at Casa Manzoni, former home of the famous writer Alessandro Manzoni. The exhibit featured atmospheric soundscapes throughout the apartment, including readings from Manzoni’s writings, while subtle ambient violet lighting washed over the various spaces, emphasizing the beautiful colour palettes of the furniture on display.

Into the AI future with Moooi

Moooi brought a delightful interactive flair to Salone this year with an AI generated personalized room spray maker. Visitors were asked to answer a series of questions, after which the program created a customized scent based on their personality.

Be Ready For Summer! Order Your Outdoor Furniture Now To Get It In Time For Patio Season

While the current frigid winter temperatures may have you feeling like summer is a lifetime away, spring is just around the corner. With warmer temperatures our attention inevitably turns toward outdoor living, but the issue many people face is that by the time they realize they want to update or furnish their outdoor spaces, it’s already too late due to the time it takes for the items to be manufactured and shipped. If you want your outdoor living space to be ready for summer, we recommend you get started now!

Extensive lead times make timing essential.

Whether you’re looking to level up your outdoor game and make a statement with the latest outdoor collection from Minotti, create an outdoor sanctuary with designs that are both durable and inspired by nature from RODA, or upgrade to iconic forever classics by Richard Schultz, they all have one thing in common – lead times.

It can take weeks and even months from order placement for your items to arrive on your patio. The reason for this is that designer items are usually made to order. Furthermore, once an order has been placed and the product has been manufactured to your specifications, it can take another several weeks of transit time for the items to arrive, depending on where they are shipping from.

Many of our brands ship from Italy. Others, such as the famous 1966 Collection from the godfather of modern outdoor furniture, Richard Schultz, ship from the United States and will take less time.

In-stock designer options are limited, but can provide a quick turnaround time.

The exception to the rule in terms of lead times are select products from brands such as Knoll and Coro. While these are still designer items and represent the finest in craftsmanship and design, some of their products are ready-made, enabling us to stock them in anticipation of the upcoming summer season.

Our Ready-To-Ship inventory includes a wide range of products, including outdoor and indoor furniture, lighting and accessories.

Don’t let patio season sneak up on you. Get in touch with us or shop online to get started on your outdoor plan for this summer!

QuickShip program for Saarinen table collection.

One of the biggest challenges with made-to-order products are the extended lead times that often come with them. To address this, Knoll has implemented a quick ship program for its Saarinen table collection. The program ensures you will receive your table within 2-6 weeks, depending on the materials and finishes you choose.

La Manufacture Now At Livingspace

Introducing our newest brand partner at Livingspace Vancouver - La Manufacture.

The je ne sais quoi of French allure meets Italian craftsmanship.

After years of dreaming about making this ambitious project a reality, CEO Robert Acouri has brought together two great figures from the creative industry, who share his passion and determination: designer Luca Nichetto, Art Director at La Manufacture, and fashion consultant Milena Laquale, Head of the Fashion Collection.

On the furniture side – La Manufacture works alongside world-renowned designers such as Atelier Oi, Mark Thorpe, Front, Neri&Hu, Nendo and others to deliver the highest class of craftsmanship, creating products designed to last, both in terms of durability and enduring style. Halfway between industrial design and art, La Manufacture’s refined and modern collections feature distinctly minimalist styles, with pops of colour and perfectly curious proportions.

“La Manufacture is a chicca — an Italian word meaning something small but valuable — a rare and precious entity, elegant, refined and beyond time.” – Luca Nichetto, Designer
